Shop Front Planning Permission
Do you need shop front planning permission? If you are starting a new business or taking on a new lease, a clear, well-designed shop front is one of your most important assets. We can help you get it approved.
When do you need shop front planning permission?
A new shop front will usually need planning permission. So will alterations that materially affect the appearance of the building. Examples include installing security shutters, changing the glazing or altering the fascia.
If the building is listed, you also need listed building consent. Take extra care in conservation areas too. Very minor works, such as repainting, may not need permission, so ask us before you assume. For more detail, read the Planning Portal’s guidance on shops (https://interactive NULL.planningportal NULL.co NULL.uk/flat-and-shop/outside-flat-and-shop/shop/planning-permission).
Signs on your shop front
If your plans include new or changed signs, you may also need advertisement consent. It is best to plan the shop front and the signs together. That way you avoid delays and extra costs.
How we help with shop front planning permission
We prepare the application, the design and the plans to the standard the planning department expects. Then we liaise with the Council on your behalf to give you the best chance of a successful decision.
If the Council refuses your application, we can advise on a revised design or on planning appeals. You usually have 12 weeks to appeal a refusal for a shop front.
What to send us
To start, send us the address and photographs of the existing frontage. Add any design drawings and sign proposals you have. If you rent the property, tell us who your landlord is. Planning applications ask about who owns the property, so we need to know early.
Tell us about your shop front
Starting a new business or taking on a new lease? Tell us about the premises and what you want to change before you order any work.

We send you a fee proposal before we start work, so you know where you stand on cost.
