- Change of UseLand and buildings in the UK are categorised into a number of different use classes depending on what activities are carried out in the land or buildings. These use classes are defined by law and include use classes such as A1 Shops, A3 Restaurants and cafés, B1 Business and C3 Dwellinghouses. Changes between uses normally require a planning application to be submitted to gain planning permission, however some changes are permitted without submitting a planning application. Changes within the same use class do not require planning permission for example the change of a book shop to a shoe shop, in addition there are certain changes between class that also do not need planning permission, such as a change from A3 Restaurants and cafés to A1 Shops.
